Okay okay okay can we talk about planner overwhelm for a second?

If you've ever watched a bullet journal setup and thought, "Wait, do I need 47 pens and a second paycheck?" nope. Absolutely not.

This is your spring reset: the only 3 bullet journal pens you actually need for a beautiful, functional weekly spread.

Not 30. Not a rainbow case. Three.

And yes, I tested this with my current March weekly layout.

What Are the Best Pens for a Bullet Journal?

1) The Core Structure Pen

Use: grid lines, task lists, labels, checkboxes, notes

My pick: Sakura Pigma Micron 03 (0.35 mm)

Why this one works:

  • Crisp line = clean structure
  • Ink holds up to highlighter better than most random gel pens
  • Fine enough for small planner boxes, bold enough to read quickly

Typical price right now:

  • Around $3.50 for a single 03 pen (US retailer listings)

Budget alternative:

  • MUJI Gel Ink Cap Type Ballpoint Pen 0.5mm (about $1.90 on MUJI US)

If you only buy one "real" planner pen, make it this category. This is the skeleton of your spread.

2) The Joyful Header Pen

Use: week title, day headers, section names, mini callouts

My pick: Tombow Dual Brush Pen (single color)

Why this one works:

  • Flexible brush tip for that hand-lettered look
  • Fine tip on the other end for quick labels
  • One pen = decorative + practical

Typical price right now:

  • Tombow USA lists 10-packs at $32.50 (about $3.25 per pen)
  • Singles in craft stores are usually in that same ballpark

Budget alternative:

  • Crayola Super Tips (use one marker as your header pen)

I know it's "just a header," but this is the part that makes you want to open your planner every day.

3) The Functional Color Pen

Use: time-blocking, category highlighting, visual separation

My pick: Zebra Mildliner

Why this one works:

  • Soft color that doesn't scream at you
  • Great for coding work/personal/home without visual chaos
  • Chisel + bullet tip gives you both broad highlight and detail markups

Typical price right now:

  • 5-packs are commonly around $10-$12 at US retailers
  • Singles are often around the low-$2 range, depending on store

Budget alternative:

  • Any pastel highlighter 2-pack from Target/Walmart/drugstore brands

I've tried basically every highlighter wall at Michael's and nothing else hits this sweet spot. Mildliners are functional, not neon panic.

How Can You Set Up a Beautiful Weekly Spread in 15 Minutes With Only 3 Pens?

Here's the exact flow I used this week:

  1. Draw the frame (4 minutes)
  • With Micron 03, draw 7 day boxes + one "Notes" box
  • Add tiny checkbox columns inside each day
  1. Write headers (3 minutes)
  • Use Tombow for "Week of March ___" and day initials
  • Keep lettering simple: thick downstrokes, light upstrokes
  1. Add functional color (3 minutes)
  • Mildliner for 3 categories:
    • Work tasks
    • Personal/admin
    • Self-care/rest
  1. Fill in anchor plans (5 minutes)
  • Appointments first
  • Top 3 priorities next
  • Then optional tasks

That's it. Done in 15.

And honestly? It looks BETTER than my 12-pen spreads from January.

Why Does a 3-Pen Layout Work Better Than a Full Stationery Set?

  • Fast setup means you'll actually keep doing it every week.
  • One black pen for structure keeps your page readable.
  • One brush pen for headers gives personality without overdesigning.
  • One highlighter for coding helps you scan your week in seconds.

Pretty + usable + repeatable. That's planner peace.

If you're building a true beginner bullet journal supplies kit, this is it. This is minimal stationery that still feels personal and fun.

What Should You Buy First If You're Keeping It Minimal?

  • Sakura Pigma Micron 03 - around $3.50
  • Tombow Dual Brush Pen (single-equivalent) - around $3.25
  • Zebra Mildliner (single-equivalent) - around $2+

Estimated total: about $9-$11 for your full 3-pen system.

Budget basket version:

  • MUJI 0.5 gel pen - $1.90
  • 1 Crayola Super Tip (from multi-pack)
  • 1 pastel drugstore highlighter

You can absolutely start this for the price of one fancy coffee run.

If you're in spring-clean mode, pair this with my Stationery Haul: What's Actually Worth It at Michael's so you can skip the stuff that just looks cute in the cart.

FAQ: Minimal Bullet Journal Pens

Do I really only need 3 pens for bullet journaling?

Yes. One structure pen, one header pen, one highlighter covers 90% of a weekly spread. Add more later only if you want to.

What's the best budget pen for bullet journals?

A MUJI 0.5 gel pen is my favorite budget structure pen right now. If you already have a smooth black pen at home, start there.

How long does a minimal bullet journal setup take?

About 15 minutes for a functional weekly spread once you know your layout.

Do Zebra Mildliners bleed through bullet journal paper?

On decent paper (like Leuchtturm1917), usually no major bleed-through in normal use. Always test the last page first.

What if I still want decoration?

Do it. Your planner, your rules. Keep the 3-pen core for function, then add washi or stickers as your bonus layer. If you want ideas, steal one from my Habit Tracker Setup That Actually Sticks.
